Tibbetts Middle School
Penney Smith 6th grade

Oct. 1  We arrived at the door and burst in.  I am sure that the sixth graders were overwhelmed with all the adults invading their space.

Each UNM student did a book talk.  The class selected two books to read.  One group will read Al Capone did my shirts and the other group will read Amoung The Hidden.

I enjoyed the 6th graders.  Their personalities are starting to be known.  Some more frequently than others.  The lesson on communication was good.  Even if they know the rules of communication they still need to be reminded.

We have a terrific group.  We read a chapter and the students practiced their role.  I believe that it will take a couple of class periods for the students to be comfortable with the roles and us.  There are a lot of adults all sitting around watching and listening.  I think it would be very intimidating for a sixth grade to act naturally with so many adults.  They will become more comfortable as time goes on and they get to know us as we get to know them.

Oct 22nd

We went to the Tibbetts library today.  We had a group of 5.  There were only two adults.  The students did a great job.  We(the adults) read and the students did there parts.  We have a few quiet ones but the natural leaders of the group make sure that they get to talk.  They are making connections without our guidance.  When talking about the meaning of slaughterhouse one student said he knew what that was because they learned it when they read Charlottes Web.  We even got a few drawings.  They changed roles part of the way through class.  It was their decision and they were comfortable with it so we let them go.  They have become a very independent group.  I don't think it was anything we did.  They are just a good mix of students.

October 29

Our group had a new student join our group.  He seems to fit with the group and joined in on several discussions.  We had time after Tibbetts to discuss what we are going to do next week.

 Nov 5th Literature Circle

It was a very short class due to an assembly that morning.  We (the UNM students) had parts in the literature circle and had the 6th graders watch.  The students decided to read the next two chapters on their own.

Nov 12th

It was a bit confusing at the beginning because some of the students who had been in the class were now in another class.  It seems that we still have all 7 of our students left in the Among the Hidden literature circle.  The students ran the circle all by themselves. We read the chapters but they were in control.  They seem to be doing a good job.  They were a little quiet but they did discuss.

Nov 19th

Today was the pefect example of teaching.  We went to Tibbetts thinking that we would be able to do a practice taping of the students in a literature circle.  Instead we got to administer reading tests to the students.  So hopefully we will be able to practice and tape next week.

Nov. 26

We had a full house and all of the students in our group was present.  We read the book and did a run through on the video taping of a literature circle.  They did a great job.  I think that they will do a great job next week when we do the real thing.

A mountain climbing exploration
Took us to these distant peaks
Where no one's ever been before.
Was it my imagination?
Did I feel this mountain move?
Did I hear it snore?
